Diving, Activities and Tours
Diving
The seas around the Komodo and Flores Islands offer world class diving and snorkeling.. With over 50 dive sites and pristine waters, visibility is generally excellent and offers a chance to see a wide range of coral and marine animals such as Manta rays and cetaceans. There are several experienced dive operators in Labuan Bajo. The Lodge is happy to assist you with bookings.
Tours to the National Park
The highlights of tours to Komodo National Park are walks on Komodo and Rinca Islands and snorkeling off the beaches. Transport from Flores is by traditional ocean-going fishing boat.
Komodo Island is the main island and apart from the Dragons, it is famous for its dry land habitat and variety of Birds. During the walk you can see many species of Birds, Deer, Pigs, and many Orchids. Snorkeling is an option from beautiful pink beach where the Fish and Coral are spectacular.
Rinca is a greener, more undulating island with many wildlife including Komodos, Deer, Buffaloes, wild Pigs and many species of Birds and Monkeys. Snorkeling is available around Goat Island.
River Boat Tours
Take a short trip evening or early morning in our boat up the nearby Nangenai river to see kingfishers, ducks, storks, monkeys, monitor lizards, and sometimes the rare endangered Estuarine crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. A specimen nearly 4 metres long was seen in January 2009.
Tours to Kelimutu and beyond
Kelimutu Crater Lakes Eco Lodge is under construction on a secluded riverbank near Moni. Perfect for viewing the spectacular coloured lakes, trekking and birdwatching. Many of the iconic birds of Flores can be seen in the surrounding forest of the Kelimutu National Park.
Flores is a rugged and dramatic island, dominated by a string of volcanoes interspersed with amazing valleys and diverse villages. The most famous volcano is Kelimutu in central Flores, with three summit crater lakes of varying colours. Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) is generally green and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) is red. The colours sometimes change for no known reason, in this region rich in legend.
Expeditions to the site of the Hobbitt excavation are also popular. The cave is 4 hours drive from Labuan Bajo, near the town of Ruteng. Traditional circular ‘spider-web’ fields can be seen along the way.
The Lodge staff will be happy to arrange and recommend tours and diving trips
