New Ecolodge opens on the Island of Flores

Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge is located on the outskirts of the small township of Moni, which serves as the gateway to the island of Flores’ main tourist attraction, Kelimutu Naitonal Park. The Park is about 9km off the main road just before Moni from Ende. Moni is a scenic uplands environment, cooler than the lowlands and great for walking.

The new solar powered lodge has 5 cottages and 5 rooms in the main building. Nestled on a serene hillside with stunning views of Mt Kelemutu and the surrounding tropical forests and valley.

The Wilsons have just returned from a trip through Flores, part of which, was spent in the village of Moni inspecting the development of our new lodge (The Kelimutu Crater Lakes eco Lodge). The Lodge is being built under the management of Putu Febri (Balinese and Chief Engineer of Ecolodges Indonesia) and is over 30% complete. Situated on a beautiful site beside a permanent river, it should be open by July 2010. This is going to be another gem of a lodge and is a credit to Meryl Wilson’s design skills and her ability to work cohesively with Pak Putu. Travel agents who specialise in the Trans Flores Safari (an upcoming tourist route) are clamouring for rooms in this lodge. It is hoped it will bring business to the Kelimutu National Park and play a significant role in its protection and conservation. The main attractions will the unique lakes, the birds and hiking through beautiful scenery.

EcoLodges Indonesia supports the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC Partnership) - a coalition of 32 organizations working together to foster increased understanding of sustainable tourism practices and the adoption of universal sustainable tourism principles. The Partnership, which was initiated by Rainforest Alliance, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Foundation, and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), launched the Sustainable Tourism Criteria at the World Conservation Congress in October 2008. These criteria provide the minimum standard that any tourism business should aspire to reach in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources while ensuring tourism meets its potential as a tool for poverty alleviation.

Sumatra, Lampung, Way Kambas Natonal Park, Satwa Elephant Ecolodge

Way Kambas Natural Reserve and Elephant Training Centre is located about 130 km from Bandar Lampung. It is one of the oldest reserves in Indonesia, declared in 1937, and was upgraded to a national park in 1989. It was established to protect important freshwater and lowland rain forest flora and fauna in southern Sumatra. Despite its long standing as a nature reserve and increased protection in 1989, most of its land has been degraded by human interference (Scott 1994).Along with the Sumatra Rhino Sanctuary, it is the main attraction for local and international visitors. It covers an area of 1,280 square kilometres and showcases the various methods employed in taming wild elephants to undertake tasks – including in the logging industry. Elephants treks through the marshes and forests are offered accompanied by a mahout or trainer. Sumatra Rhino Sanctuary

is a professionally managed operation improving management for the Sumatran rhino husbandry in a more natural environment than city zoos. Each rhino has some 10 to 20 hectares of forest habitat, close to their normal conditions in their natural habitat. The SRS research program covers daily activities, type and nutrient content of food components, patterns of feeding activity, exploration activities, estrus cycle reproduction hormones, courtship and mating behaviour. Before the opening of the small scale (8 guest rooms) Satwa Sumatra Elephant Ecolodge in 2007, limited basic accommodation is offered to visitors and the attractions had catered mainly to the needs of local visitors. In 2007, as part of www.ecolodgesindonesia.com, increasing (but still small) numbers of international visitors are experiencing the natural attributes of Way Kambas National Park. Independent travelers are also making their way to the National Park.

Orangutan Foundation International (www.orangutan.org) protects 6,000 wild orangutans in Tanjung Puting National Park, in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Communications Officer Internship

Duration is from 6 to 12 months.

There is a cost of US$250 per month for food and lodging, which will be arranged by OFI.

Transportation expenses, travel and health insurance ares the responsibility of the Intern.
Proof of vaccinations and a health certificate from a doctor are also required.
Applications for the next internship beginning January 15th are due November 1st.

The OFI Fellows Program offers individuals a rare opportunity to travel abroad and witness firsthand the impact and realities of wildlife and habitat protection, by working at OFI’s Orangutan Care Center in Pasir Pajan, Kalimantan. The OFI Fellow is an unpaid, volunteer based position designed to increase OFI’s impact and to offer participants a unique insider experience.

April 01, 2009: Bali, Indonesia: Founder and Chairman of Ecolodges Indonesia, Dr Wilson has made significant contributions during his life to global poverty alleviation and wildlife conservation, but there is another passion which he has now been recognised for.

Alan has received the prestigious Lifetime Service Award by the International Cricket Council, East Asia -Pacific (ICC - EAP).

As the international governing body for cricket, the International Cricket Council values openness, honesty and integrity, working to the highest ethical standards - all exemplified by Dr Wilson’s lifelong professional dedication to Animal Husbandry, improving the livelihoods of people in developing economies through international development and ecotourism .

ICC - EAP stated that Alan ‘has been an outstanding long time servant of cricket in Indonesia, and is widely attributed as the man who has made cricket what it is today in Indonesia through his perseverance, commitment and generosity.’

‘Cricket is a wonderful game where people of different skills and strengths come together to work as a team‘, said Dr Wilson. ‘Here in Indonesia, it has helped develop a sense of fairness, equity and respect for diversity that are fundamental in the international game of cricket.’
